This interactive, hands-on session, introduced the students to the field of Biomedical Informatics where we explored a data driven approach to understanding the health of the community in which one lives. It unites undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members in multidisciplinary teams that work on long-term projects in research, design, innovation and entrepreneurship. It provides a real-world context for course work, shapes career paths, and builds professional, teamwork, and leadership skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.

Projects, teams, and participants are elevated by the broad knowledge, talents, and experiences assembled by engaging individuals from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. The long-term nature of the projects provides students with the opportunity to grow as a team member, make substantial contributions, and rise through the ranks of team leadership.

The BMI sponsored course is framed within the context of population health informatics, but contributions are needed from a diverse array of disciplines, and thus the first class had PhD candidates in nursing, undergraduate students in engineering, biology and mathematics. BMI Graduate Program The overarching mission of the graduate program in Biomedical Informatics at Stony Brook University is to train Biomedical Informatics professionals to make important discoveries, develop new technologies, and apply novel approaches Translational Bioinformatics, Imaging and Clinical Informatics.

This workshop type class, has an innovative curriculum integrating healthcare data with social determinants of health to give the students a wide view of healthcare issues in our community. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first, and we think the only, required Informatics course for medical students in the US. A variety of options area available from research independent study closes to more structured offerings.

In Spring over 20 medical students worked to extract data form 4, medical records of Covid patients, adding to the Stony Brook Covid19 Data Commons.

This cooperation has so far resulted in one physician completing a Certificate Program in Informatics, then going on to enroll in a Clinical Informatics Fellowship.
